2020 Pick-Ups

About halfway through 2020 I decided to start tracking how many games I had picked up within the year, and wow, it was a lot. Assuming I didn’t miss anything, it looks like I picked up 428 physical games in the year! That’s 1.17 games a day! Absolutely nuts! The craziest part of this is that I probably only played about 10 of these games so far. I’ve decided in 2021 to severely reduce the amount of games I purchase and dedicate a good chunk of time to playing through these 2020 PickUps.

I will be playing, streaming and discussing a lot of these games over the next few months (if not years) as I try to get through this massive pile of games. I will likely break them down into categories, maybe by system, AAA, Indies, genres, etc. It should be fun to go through this.

I also feel the need to clarify, despite picking up 428 physical games in 1 year, I am not rich, nor am I broke either. Most of my games were picked up for a few bucks each at thrift stores and yard sales, I also had a friend who no longer plays games, let me pick through his XBox, PS2 and XBox 360 collection really cheap. Black Friday/Holiday sales were huge in pumping up my PS4 collection and some of the Switch collection. Still I know this was a lot of money when it’s all added up, but not quite as costly as it seems.

I almost automatically will buy any Nintendo published titles. Any of my favorite older generation games that get ported or remastered on the Switch is also a near automatic purchase for me. The hybrid abilities of handheld and console knock it out of the park for me. If there’s any other lower tech demanding games (usually indies) the Switch is also my console of choice. I do my best to get these games on sale and as cheap as possible. The one’s by Limited Run, Super Rare, Special Reserve etc, I purchase for collecting and supporting physical, I do not open these games, if I’m really interested in them, I’ll buy a digital copy too.

23– Just keeping up with the releases as well as I can, I actually missed the Star Wars Jedi and Samurai Jack releases this year because I was too busy and lost track. None of these games get opened, they just sit on the shelf, some of these I own and have no interest in, the ones I do, I will buy digitally.

6 – This is my favorite company of the limited prints. The quality of their product, the content, the boxes, etc are all top grade. The Messenger was the first game I got from them and was very impressed by the presentation, I now try to get them all.

I’m enjoy the games this company picks, but because they’re overseas, sometimes they get released in NA through a NA Publisher too, so I end up double dipping. The time from pre-order to release is so long from these guys, (sometimes over a year) a lot of news changes by the time I get it in hand.

5 – Only a handful of Wii U Games this year, I picked most up at a thrift store for 50cents apiece, and then I got the “last” Wii U Game, Shakedown Hawaii when it was released in the summer.
