Genesis Retro Mix Vol.1
The First SEGA Genesis Mix was a 5 Game series with a bit of a random selection: X-Men 2: Clone Wars, Garfield: Caught in The Act, Super Street Fighter II, Rock ‘N’ Roll Racing and Greendog
X-Men 2 Clone Wars (Action) – I don’t remember ever playing this game but the first level in particular looks very familiar. I have seen this on people’s Top 10 or Top 25 lists for SEGA Genesis games, and after playing it, that doesn’t surprise me. The controls were very responsive and there was some cool level design and enemy patterns. I was pretty impressed with the game even if I got frustrated and got a Game Over. I made it up to Level 3-4 and died at the boss fight against Exodus.
Garfield: Caught in The Act (Platformer) – This game looks fun, and by watching the demo it seems like there are some cool levels to play, but this game is HARD. And it wasn’t even a fun/challenging type of hard, it was very CHEAP. I played this with my wife and we made it up to the boss of the first level, but couldn’t figure out if we were actually damaging it or not. It was very frustrating and seemed to be very unforgiving and cheap. I was pretty frustrated with it. I’m going to look into seeing if I was doing something wrong, or if this game is actually that cheap.
Super Street Fighter II (Fighter) – I use to love the Street Fighter II series, but the Super Nintendo was always my platform of choice. I know there are minor differences, and control preference also plays a part, but wow I struggled with this game. Ryu was cheap as shit, and it’s one of the reasons I always hate the AI in fighting games. It seems to always anticipate perfectly a counter to whatever I was going to do. I’m pretty sure as soon as I enter a command, the AI is entering a counter response that almost always wins. If I throw a fireball, they throw a fireball, if I jump kick they uppercut, if I block high they go low, INSTANTLY, like they’re reading my mind. Anyways this didn’t last long, once I finally got the satisfaction of beating Ryu I was ready to move on. We played “Super” mode.
Rock’N’Roll Racing (Racer) – My wife and I played this, it was actually pretty fun, a bit easy at first there too. My memory of this game held it in a lot higher regard and I feel like it’s still thought of fondly by a lot of people. But after playing this now, I don’t think it is/was anything that special. Still, it was fun I’m not trying to really knock it, it just doesn’t seem like a classic.
Greendog (Platformer) – I forgot almost everything about this game going into it. Now that I’ve played it again, I can say confidently that I hate it. It was very boring, very plain, very uninteresting. For the most part the game was very easy, but the very last level the difficulty spiked high, I went through all of my remaining lives and continues and I didn’t even make it half way through. It involved jumping over spikes, pits and avoiding a constantly spawning bird. It was obnoxious.
