2016 – The Year of the Playstation 4

Majority of my time gaming in 2015 was surprisingly spent on the Wii U.  Splatoon and Super Mario Maker were the two releases from 2015 that really got a lot of play time, but I played a lot of older releases too, especially in the summer.   There were a few months where I never even used my Playstation 4, it just collected dust.   Going into 2015, I would’ve never expected this.

My most anticipated PS4 game was Uncharted 4, and it had been delayed into 2016…I felt like there was no big holiday title, especially not exclusive for the Playstation 4.  In 2015 Bloodborne was a big release, but I could never get into it, I just did not like it.  Battlefield Hardline was a flop, The Order: 1886 was very fun but I was done with it entirely in 10 hours or less.  Batman Arkham Knight felt like more of the same, it wasn’t bad though but I only rented it and didn’t bother finishing.   A lot of other games did not feel like they were worth the full price and I knew they’d drop in price down the line.  I ended up picking up a few of them recently for cheap (Batman Arkham Knight, Mad Max, Resident Evil: Revelations 2, Dragon Quest Heroes, Tales of Zesteria, Until Dawn).   To be fair though, there were 2 games in particular I’m sure are great, I just never made the time for them. Those games are The Witcher 3 and Metal Gear Solid V.  I played some of Witcher 3 and it does seem fantastic, I hope to play more of those in 2016.

Now 2016 is here, I have some discounted backlogged titles from 2015 and it looks like the Playstation 4 has a strong line-up of releases for the year that will keep a Dual Shock 4 in my hands through the year.  The Wii U looks to be on it’s last legs, with only a few delayed 2015 titles coming out this year.  And the XBox One still hasn’t given me a reason to spend my money on it when I already have a Playstation 4.    The following is where I think a lot of my PS4 gaming will be spent.

Leftovers From 2015:

Batman Arkham Knight – I played through about half of this in the summer on a free rental but found myself bored before I could finish it.  I was able to recently purchase it for $15 new, I’m hoping to pick it back up and finish it this time.

Just Cause 3 – I’m currently about halfway through the 2nd Act, when I wrap up the story mode I’ll gauge how much time I want to spend pursuing side missions and trophies.  As of now I think I will re-sell this game shortly after I complete it.

Mad Max – I recently bought this for $15, I’ve never played it before so I’m excited to check this out.  I’m hoping it’s a good game, it didn’t grab my interest enough to spend full price on it, now that it’s cheap it’s become something to play in 2016.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain – I never prioritized time for this game even though it interested me (I’ve never been into the MGS series).  I plan to sit down and play this some time during 2016, I’ve waited this long, now I’ll just wait until it’s cheap.

Rainbow Six: Siege – I’ve already spent a good amount of time playing this online this year.  Siege seems like something I’ll always be able to pick up and play and have fun with, I’m sure this will be played off and on throughout the year.

Resident Evil: Revelations 2 – I also recently picked this up for $15, I played and enjoyed the original.  I waited for it to get cheap before purchasing, will definitely give it a play through.

Tales of Zesteria – I got this as part of a Buy 2 Get 1 Free promotion in December, I played Dragon Quest Heroes first, now I’m on Xenoblade Chronicles X, but Tales will definitely be my next JRPG.

Uncharted Collection – I’m currently playing through Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception for the first time.  It of course has the same quality gameplay and polish of the other games in the series.

Until Dawn – I bought this for $16 new, and would like to take a weekend and play through it since it’s short.  It’s supposed to be one of the better exclusives on the system.

2016 Releases

Battleborn (May) – Borderlands was one of my favorite franchises from last gen, and while I’m aware this isn’t another Borderlands, it is by the same people at Gearbox.  I’m not locked into this yet, but it definitely has my attention.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (August) – When the last Deus Ex came out on 360 I was pulled in, I ended up unlocking all of the achievements.  I can’t wait to play Mankind Divided, I’m expecting this to be a day one purchase.

Far Cry Primal (February) – I’m buying this off of the strength of Far Cry 3.  Far Cry 4 kind of felt like a cheap copy/paste sequel, I’m really hopeful that Far Cry Primal brings something new that helps give some new energy to the series.  If Primal turns out to be more of the same, and it looks like Ubisoft is churning these out like Assassin’s Creeds, then unfortunately this might be the last time I really get interested/excited for a new Far Cry.

Hellblade [PS4 Exclusive] (TBA 2016) – Heavenly Sword, Enslaved and DmC developer Ninja Theory is developing Hellblade so I figure it’s probably time I check out what they have to offer.  I’m curious for this one, I’ll probably go by reviews and buzz before deciding to put down full price on it.

Hitman (March – June) – I’m excited about a new Hitman, definitely looking forward to playing it.  But the recently announced episodic style release has me unsure on how I will approach playing this.  I’m more likely to just wait for the full disc release before trying it out.

Homefront: The Revolution (May) – The main reason I’m interested in this game is because it’s by the development team that’s responsible for the Time Splitters series (and some from the old Golden Eye and Perfect Dark team). The original Homefront wasn’t very good in my opinion, hopefully this will be better.  Unless terrible things come out about it, I’ll probably pre-order this to support the dev team.

Horizon: Zero Dawn [PS4 Exclusive] (TBA 2016) – Guerilla Games (Killzone) new game is supposed to come out this year and it looks really good.  I feel like dinosaurs have been absent from video games so I’m glad to see them make an appearance in this.  I have very high expectations of this game.  Potential Game of The Year candidate expectations.

Mafia III (TBA 2016) – I really enjoyed Mafia II a lot, I hope this expands on it and we see the series take it’s next step and emerge as one of the better open world games out there.  I actually am more confident in Mafia III being something I’d enjoy than GTA VI.

Mighty No. 9 (May) – Whenever this game comes out, I plan on playing it, I’m a huge Mega Man fan.  I have a signature edition pre-ordered, plus the Playstation version is cross-play compatible with Vita and PS3.

Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst (May) – I’m not even that sure I’ll play this, if I do it’ll most likely be towards the end of the year when I can find it for cheap.  I enjoyed the first Mirror’s Edge but my interest has died down since then and I don’t really care too much for a sequel.   I’ll be somewhat curious if it gets good feedback and I can find it cheap, other than that I could pass on it.

Nier: Automata [PS4 Exclusive] (TBA 2016) – I never played Nier, but it’s being developed by Platinum Games so I am definitely interested.  I’ll actually be surprised if this makes it out in 2016 though.

Odin Sphere: Lefthrasir [PS4 Exclusive] (June) – I loved other Vanillaware games such as Muramasa and Dragon’s Crown, I never really played Odin Sphere though so this will be a new experience.  I’m really looking forward to this and I’m usually down on any remasters.

Ratchet & Clank [PS4 Exclusive] (April) – I have a very small amount of experience with the Ratchet & Clank series, but I do like platformers and it does look like a game that would interest me. A reboot seems like a good place to get in.

Rise of the Tomb Raider (Q4 2016) – I thought the last Tomb Raider was really good and Rise of the Tomb Raider looks just as impressive.  PS4 owners have to wait an extra year over the XB1 owners, but knowing Uncharted 4 is around the corner it won’t be that hard to wait.

Shadow of The Beast [PS4 Exclusive] (March) – I don’t know much about the original, but this remake looks interesting because it seems to still have old school gameplay to it.  I’m very curious about how it is received, I might wait for a sale or the possibility of it being a free PS+ game.

The Last Guardian [PS4 Exclusive] (TBA 2016) – This is another title I’ll actually be surprised if it makes a 2016 release, it’s just been delayed so many times before that I’m not confident in it’s release date.  I am pretty confident in it being a good title whenever it does release though, I really enjoyed Shadow of The Colossus, Team Ico is very talented.

TMNT (Summer 2016) – TMNT was my favorite cartoon series as a kid and the games were also some of my favorites.  Platinum Games are one of my favorite developers and now they will be releasing a new TMNT game.  I’m curious how this will turn out, Transformers: Devastation was just “ok”, I’m hoping TMNT turns out better.

Uncharted 4 [PS4 Exclusive] (April) – Uncharted 4 and Naughty Dog are one of the main reasons I sided with the Playstation 4 early on, I knew this was a must-have exclusive for me.  This is a system selling series and a system selling developer.  I’m really expecting near perfection from this game, very high expectations and I’m really not worried at all about it delivering.  I’m predicting this will be my Game of The Year for 2016, if anything surpasses it, that would just be a bonus.

Valkyria Chronicles Remastered [PS4 Exclusive] (May) – I never played the original and this seems like a game I would be interested in.  This remaster is only $30, I’m willing to give it a shot.

Wii U / Nintendo

I still have some titles from the past year or so that will get play on the Wii U (Xenoblade, Splatoon, Super Mario Maker, Yoshi, Smash Bros, etc) but I don’t think that will compare in playing time to all the new Playstation 4 releases, on top of the leftovers.  If Nintendo does release a new console in 2016 in will be too late in the year to surpass the past 10 months.

Every one of these is a Wii U Exclusive

Pokken Tournament (March) – I’m not really into Tekken or Pokemon, the game does look like a cool fighter though.  The last Tekken I played was Tekken Tag 2, and I wasn’t really that into it.  Hopefully there is some good replay value as a Single Player game.  I don’t know if I’ll pick this up.

The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess HD (March) –  I never finished the original, I got pretty far though.  I will pick this up and try to play through it again, it was very good.

Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem (TBA 2016) – I love Fire Emblem, but have never played Shin Megami Tensei before.  This game looks more Shin Megami Tesnei than Fire Emblem, this might not be for me.

Star Fox Zero (April 2016) – I played the demo and really liked what I played, but I’m also kinda worried about this.  As a fan of the series I will pick this up day one.

And that’s it.  That’s all that it really known coming out for Wii U in 2016 (outside of the eShop).  I don’t see any of those games really occupying much of my time, especially as far as replay value goes.

XBox One

I won one of these before, and then I sold it a week later.  I haven’t seen a reason to own a XBox One when I already have a Playstation 4.  Pretty much anything that is multiplatform will be the the same or better on Playstation 4, and the XBox One Exclusives have not interested me.  I’m not a Halo fan, and I’ve tried several times through the 360’s life to get into it.  Forza may be considered the best racing game out, there are other racers out that can scratch any racing itch I get…I’m not even that into racing games in the first place. Sunset Overdrive is the only released XBox One Exclusive that interests me.  And here is what’s coming in 2016

Every one of these is an XB1 Exclusive

Gears of War 4 – I got tired of Gears of War during the 3rd one, I didn’t even pick up Judgement.  It reached a point with me where it all felt the same.  That might not entirely be Gears’ fault, since the first 2 there have been a lot of knock-offs and behind-cover shooters.  I’m not denying this will be good, I just don’t think I’ll buy an XBox One for it.

Quantum Break – This doesn’t interest me.  I didn’t think Alan Wake was that great of a game (same developers) and from the footage I’ve seen of this, it just hasn’t interested me.  Maybe I’m wrong about this or missing something.

Halo Wars 2 – This is more appealing to me than a regular Halo game, but it’s still not appealing enough.

Crackdown 3 – The first one was ok, I didn’t care to play the second one, and that’s how I feel about the 3rd.

Cuphead – This is the 2016 XBox One Exclusive that interests me the most.  It’s probably not worth buying the system over, but it does look very fun.  The art style gets me.

Recore – All i’ve seen is a CGI trailer of this, we don’t even know much about it.  I highly doubt it’s coming out in 2016.

Sea of Thieves – In my opinion, this looked like crap.  If it comes out in 2016 it will be crap, it doesn’t look anywhere near finished.  It’s hard to know how interested in this game in the end, as of now it didn’t look like anything I would want to play, but like I said, it looks unfinished. Rare is the only reason I paid attention, but I can’t remember the last Rare game worth the attention.

No Interest At All
I don’t have any interest in any of these XB1 Exclusives: Gigantic, Cobalt, Tacoma, We Happy Few, Oxen Free.  Sorry.
I know this makes me look like a fanboy, I’m really not though.  I played my XBox 360 far more than I did my Playstation 3.  I bought a 360 in 2006 and bought a PS3 in 2010, XBox 360 was the better platform for sure.  This generation it seems like things have swapped.  I am just not interested in some of the games Microsoft puts out, different tastes.  After a while if the XBox One builds up more reasons for me to have it alongside the Playstation 4, I probably will get one, and have a backlog of games to go with it.
